Junior Cert 2009 - Revision questions for the weekend

This is the first entry for Junior Cert 2009.
I have missed a few days, unfortunately, so this is the work which I would like all students to attempt over the weekend and on Monday (a day off for you).

It is all from the purple book.

Page 13: questions 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 31
- practicing factoring, in q31 you have to simplify (multiply out brackets) and factor the result.

Page 19: questions 5, 8, 17, 20
- writing as a single fraction (don't forget what you do if adding eg 1/2 + 1/3 => get LCM on the bottom and adjust the tops)

Page 31: questions 13, 16, 41, 44
- quadratics must be in the form ..x² + ...x + number = 0 before you can factor them and solve
- watch out for questions of type (x+3)² => you must work out (x+3)(x+3)

Page 35: questions 7, 10, 13
- make sure you can recall and use the quadratic formula correctly.

Page 38: questions 3, 4
- this is the replacement trick. Solve the first quadratic, then take each of the values you get for x and substitute the new expression = x and solve again.

Page 46: questions 4, 9, 10
- remember the rules for graphing x ∈ R, Z or N

Page 142: questions 5, 6
- two straightforward income tax questions. Careful with "expressing x as a percentage of y" part at the end (x/y × 100%)

Page 177: question 1
- practice of perimeter area and volume.

Page 188: questions 4, 5, 6
- practice of Sets notation - you may need to look in the chapter in the orange book

Page 253: questions 17, 18
- a little practice of scientific notation

Page 401
- looking back over first 2 theorems - revise the structure and layout of a theorem proof.

I will post some solutions to these questions over the course of the weekend. Make sure you try them all. You can check your answers in the back of the book also.

I'll give you a new schedule of work on Tuesday.
